Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.
Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.
A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.
Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
