The Princess of Wales's Traditional Christmas Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The large audience will enjoy a mix of carols, music and readings from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Love and Generosity

The focus of the event, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The royal has been undertaking her own steady comeback to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Music and Opportunity

Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the former royal to widen access to music lessons.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the organisation, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be performing at the concert.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, honouree of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
