Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
